Back to Basics on Monday

The local electricity distribution company tells me they will be carrying out routine maintenance to the local network on Monday and we will have no electricity at Nell Bridge House from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

I mainly work from home in my study these days and I had to think about coping without electricity in an all-electric and only-electric house.

My laptop will work off battery for three hours or so  and my iPad will go quite a lot longer without a charge.  However, when the power goes off, so will my ‘phone system and my broadband connections.  So, no ‘phone calls, no answering machine, no fax, no copier, no scanner, no e-mails and no internet access.

Well, I think about this and decide I can warn my colleagues to call or text me if there is anything urgent and I can get on with some DIY in the house for a change – providing it does not require a power drill or saw or hedge cutter or anything else electrical …..

Then I have a brain wave ….. I can pop into Adderbury library, plug into their power supply and log onto the wi-fi service.  On checking the County Council web site, I find the library does not open on Monday!  Sod’s Law prevails!

So I will have to rely on the Black Boy Inn at Milton which has wi-fi where I can keep in touch ….

  1. not having electricity for that long would put me in a pinch as well as I work from home and from my computer so if I didn’t have power i’d be stuck.
