During my spell as Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, I served in a number of roles in the Local Government Association, including Chairman of the Resources Panel while the LGA down sized by almost 50%; Vice-Chairman of the Community Wellbeing Board; The LGA representative on the government’s Community Covenant Reference Committee and a Member Peer serving on Peer Reviews and mentoring senior councillors who were new to the leader or cabinet role.
The LGA has a policy of continuing to employ ex-senior councillors in their Improvement programme and they kept me busy in a number of ways:
- returning to a county council where we carried out a Peer Review to assess the follow-up on our original report;
- mentoring two county council leaders;
- serving on a review into a county council’s specific service area; and
- serving on a project that crosses council boundaries in an innovative way.
I continued this work with the LGA until May 2014 and am now available as a political consultant on an independent basis.
